It was the desire of a group of Southern Pacific General Office employees located in San Francisco to organize a sporting club for the benefit of all employees interested in outdoor recreation activities. In May 1934 the Southern Pacific Rod & Gun Club became a reality with the objective to bring together in one harmonious group the many anglers and hunters along with other employees of Southern Pacific Transportation Company and affiliated companies, interested in outdoor recreation.
Before Amtrack took over the passenger train operations from the railroads, one of the yearly highlights for members and guests of our this club was to take a private pullman car for the opening day of trout season in Dunsmuir. As this car was pulled over on a siding in the yard it would be their hotel accomodations for the weekend. In the '70s membership was opened to employees of other companies as associate members and female applicants. In 1996 when Union Pacific Railroad took over the Southern Pacific operations, the name of Southern Pacific Railroad came to an end, but the members decided not to change the glorious name of their Club. To date the Southern Pacific Rod & Gun Club is one of the oldest sporting clubs in California. To the founders and organizers of this Club we owe a debt of gratitude and may the efforts serve as an inspiration to us. The memories of good sportsmanship, fellowship and of the grand Southern Pacific Railroad must never be forgotten. |
